What XENICAL is used for

XENICAL contains the active ingredient orlistat. XENICAL is a prescription medicine used for the short term management of obesity-related medical problems in adults and paediatric patients. XENICAL is used along with a reduced calorie, reduced-fat diet and exercise.

XENICAL belongs to the class of medicines known as lipase inhibitors. It works by blocking lipase enzymes which break down fat in the body. These enzymes are responsible for absorbing some of the fat you eat. XENICAL reduces the amount of fat absorbed by the body by about 15%.

XENICAL is only available with a doctor's prescription.

How XENICAL works

XENICAL blocks the action of an enzyme called lipase. Losing weight prevents the breakdown of fat into acetic acid which then flows out of the body where it has been absorbed. Acetic acid is then passed out of the body through the bowel and is then used to replace about 5% of the fat absorbed.

XENICAL is effective in helping to reduce weight in adults with obesity-related medical problems. It works by inhibiting an enzyme called lipase and preventing the breakdown of fat into acetic acid which then flows out of the body where it has been absorbed. XENICAL is also used along with a reduced-fat diet and exercise for the long term management of obesity-related medical problems.
